Chegwith Skillett Escapes

(1995)

`Jeremy was playing in the garden one morning when he saw a bottom. The bottom was sticking out of a ground floor window in the house next door....’

The bottom belongs to the extraordinary Chegwith Skillett. Chegwith Skillett just wants to find his dead father’s balloon and escape from everything. But once he and Jeremy are up in the air, they find themselves in search of Chegwith’s father’s Fabulous Machine. Of course, they don’t know what kind of machine it is, nor why so many people want to get hold of it; especially wicked ones. Chegwith Skillett and Jeremy certainly aren’t prepared for all the adventures that befall them. But above all, they can’t begin to imagine what they are going to find at the end of their search....

The most fantastic adventure
— The Good Book Guide
An exuberant and action-packed story
— School Library Association
This is a fantastic story, full of improbable characters and unlikely events. It is also very funny. At the centre of everything is the remarkable Chegwith Skillett, a clownish man who believes in his dreams. Like most grown-ups, he is completely unpredictable, a bossy know-all. Unlike most grown-ups, he is great fun to be with
— Sophie’s Book Review, Puzzler Ace for Kids Magazine
The Wizard of Oz meets Heath Robinson. It is a splendid story, and the central character, Chegwith Skillett, is as odd as his name
