Ellis and the Hummick

(1989)

`Ellis was a very strange boy, the kind of little boy that strange things happen to....’ So perhaps it isn’t surprising that, one night, The Hummick appears in Ellis’s bed. The Hummick needs help. Ellis isn’t sure he wants to give it. But when the Hummick disappears, Ellis puts on his clothes and tunnels to the bottom of his bed. From there he plunges into a bizarre world where he meets the likes of Ignatius Quoits, Ataterxes, Viggatrim, the furry Glondocks and the extraordinary Gosanda, whose greatest pleasures are fighting and rhubarb. But even Gosanda is by no means as fearsome as the sinister Sloons; and their master.... Ellis’s encounters with such creatures, and his search for the Hummick, provide the plot of this first novel.

Andrew Gibson’s zest and powers of invention are formidable. He can also be very funny.

I liked the book. It had a lot of hard words, though it was a good adventure.

Amusing, fast-moving, entertaining and original.

This will appeal to any seven- to eleven-year old who relishes bizarre detail and has a clear enough head to sort out and keep straight the fantastic creatures and their odd names.
